Upgrading From Windows 7 - 10 in CT 2019

Does your business still use Windows 7 as your operating system? If you do, you may have seen a message from Microsoft warning you that you need to upgrade to Windows 10 by 2020.

Microsoft has announced that they will end support for Windows 7 on January 14th 2020. You can continue using the operating system, but you will no longer receive vital security updates or customer support.

Using Windows 7 beyond 2019 can cause significant harm to your business’ digital security, cause compatibility issues with new programs and possibly cost your business thousands of dollars in lost productivity and additional maintenance.

Microsoft is sending reminder notifications throughout 2019 for Windows 7 personal users. However, they won't be sent to Professional, Enterprise, or Server users. Essentially, businesses are on their own, but this by no means makes upgrading less important.

If you choose not to upgrade to Windows 10, you will take the following risks:

  • You will subject your IT system and your business to an increased chance of being attacked by ransomware. Windows 10 Defender Tool has an anti-ransomware feature built into the program.

  • If you or an employee inadvertently download malware using Windows 7, your IT system and business can be put to serious risk. Windows 10 provides a safer web browsing environment with continued security updates. Plus the Windows 10 Defender Tool allows you to box off the harmful malware, so it doesn’t affect the rest of the system.

  • You could be missing out on productivity gains. The My People feature on Windows 10 allows you to pin your important or frequent contacts on the taskbar, a potentially huge productivity gain.

Through the remainder of 2019, you can use your system as usual. But it is recommended you upgrade as soon as possible (especially if you rely on your computer for business/network tasks).
